Laughter Is a Superpower

Article written by @César de la Paz , Partner – Training Director at MRC International People Training.

We laugh when something surprises us in a positive way, when we relax, or when we connect with others. But behind this seemingly simple gesture lies a powerful physiological and social mechanism — a true superpower.

Laughter activates more than 300 muscles throughout the body. The brain—especially the limbic system and areas like the hypothalamus—triggers a neurochemical response that releases dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins: the neurotransmitters of pleasure and well-being. At the same time, cortisol levels (the stress hormone) decrease, creating an almost immediate sense of relief. Laughter also improves oxygenation, regulates heart rate, and stimulates the immune system.

Laughter is not just an individual reaction—it’s deeply social. We laugh 30 times more often when we’re with others. It functions as a universal emotional language: strengthening bonds, reducing tension, and building trust. Within teams, humor acts as a catalyst for cohesion, empathy, and creativity.

Let’s not forget the physical and psychological advantages. Laughing regularly improves mood, reduces anxiety, and strengthens resilience. It’s also a powerful tool for facing difficult situations: humor allows us to step back, reinterpret events, and find solutions from a new perspective. Physically, it’s associated with lower blood pressure, better sleep quality, and greater pain tolerance.

So, is the ability to laugh—and to have a sense of humor—a key skill, a true superpower?

Having a sense of humor doesn’t mean telling jokes; it’s the ability to see the lighter side of life. This skill enhances relationships, supports decision-making under pressure, and boosts emotional agility. In professional settings, people with a good sense of humor communicate better, lead with warmth, and face change with greater flexibility.

Cultivating a sense of humor and knowing how to laugh is not frivolous—it’s strategic. It’s an emotional competency that directly impacts well-being, interpersonal effectiveness, and professional success. Laughing doesn’t just make us feel good—it makes us better equipped to live and lead in an uncertain world.

As I often joke: “I haven’t spoken seriously since I can remember.”
